Scenic views of the lake can be witnessed from the shore line Mughal gardens, such as Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir) and from houseboats cruising along the lake in the colourful shikaras. During the winter season, the temperature sometimes reaches −11 °C (12 °F), freezing the lake.

Muslims in Kashmir have high regard of these shrines and they throng to the shrines on a particular day every week and also on a particular date every month for prayers. Makhdoom Sahib Shrine is located on the southern side of Hari Parbat Hill in Srinagar. This mosque brings out the ancient culture and archaeological values in the Mughal period. Hazrat Sultan is believed to have divine powers and many devotees visit here irrespective of the religion. This shrine is visited by people of all faiths and is open throughout the year

Dastgir Sahib dargah situated in Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley. Communal harmony and syncretism are the features of this mosque for many centuries. Adorned with colourful panels that are carved intricately and the Aytal Kursi, which hang at the door, the mosque is replete with stories of a number of families, their hopes and sufferings diminished and completely abolished by just praying to the Dastgir Sahib and asking for his blessings.
